Khukuri - Ex Gurkha Khukuri House

Ex Gurkha Khukuri House also known as “EGKH” in short is the finest and largest maker of handmade traditional and modern khukuris in the world today. Khukuri is also called “Kukri” or “Khukri” by most people outside of Nepal. There are also other terms like the Gurkha Blade & Gurkha Knife used to refer to the Khukuri. These genuine knives are the real thing when it comes to chopping, cutting, slicing, hacking, etc.

Ex Gurkha Khukuri House is proud to have supplied the British Army’s Gurkha regiments with the many khukuris that they use in both military drills, training & active-duty worldwide. They are a pretty useful household tool as much as a military knife. We supply khukuris to Pakistan, the United States, the German embassy, and diversified forces of the military, police & commercial security agencies in and outside of Nepal.

Each of our knives is handcrafted one at a time by Kaamis (Singular: Kaami; Nepalese blacksmiths) who mostly belong to the “Bishwaskarma” caste. The Bishwakarmas are an ethnic community of craftsmen in Nepal who are the borne khukuri makers and have been forging khukuris & knives for many generations. These people use high-quality materials & traditional forging methods to craft a khukuri with the help of traditional hand tools. By using some modern & mostly centuries-old techniques that have been passed on to the newer generations of Nepalese blacksmiths each khukuri takes several Kaamis a whole day to finish by hand. The khukuri being durable, useful & quite affordable at the same time became one of the very best blades in the field of handmade knives. We offer a wide range of blades with over 300 separate items ranging from decorative, souvenir, traditional, military & pocket knives, to the finest custom, high grade & heavy-duty khukuris.

We are currently housed in two locations, each filled with a vast array of khukuris and other custom knives in all shapes, styles, sizes, and price ranges. One of our showrooms is currently located at Lazimpat (right in front of the Hotel Radisson), Kathmandu, Nepal. Our other office is located at Thamel-29 (A-one Business Building, Second Floor), Kathmandu, Nepal where we do all of our wholesaling, exporting, and online marketing. You are welcome to visit us, anytime, at either of these locations.

You are also always welcome to visit our factory, “Bishwakarma Khukuri Udyog” which is located in Dharan – Eastern Nepal which is about 220 kilometers East from Kathmandu. At our factory you can see how the khukuris are being made and also talk to our family of dedicated master craftsmen for any questions or queries related to these knives. The factory is running under the careful guidance of Mr. Nawaraj Ramdam who has been overseeing & inspecting the manufacturing of the khukuris there for more than 10 years. The khukuri makers at our factory are Kaamis who are borne khukuri makers of Nepal. Their skill of khukuri-making and bladesmithing has been passed down from one generation to the next as a hereditary trait stretching back to the time of Alexander the Great.

In the mid-1700s, the warrior-king, Prithivi Narayan Shah used the khukuri as a primary weapon for the armies to pacify the land and unify the kingdom of Nepal. After uniting the countryside, he divided the people into different castes & creeds and re-formed the society along organized lines: Warriors; called “Chhetris” famed for their bravery became Gurkha soldiers; Brahmans who were dedicated to a spiritual life were organized to establish and promote religious functions, and so on throughout Nepalese society.

At this time, metal workers who were skilled in the arts of blacksmithing and forging weapons helped keep the country strong, were organized into the caste of “Bishwakarmas” who continue to use their skills for their job to this day. Our own families of Kaami at Ex Gurkha Khukuri House pride themselves as the modern inheritors of this ancient legacy. It is a proud tradition to follow by every standard. To illustrate, when the great Japanese master craftsman, Amakune, made the first gracefully curved katana sword for the samurai, some 900 years ago, the art of khukuri making was already more than a thousand years old. Our family of dedicated craftsmen works very hard to carry on our ancient Nepalese tradition today. They are hereditary families, literally born in the families of smiths who are the experts in the art of khukuri making.

Not so long ago, their art of crafting the khukuri was threatened by extinction and the old ways of crafting the khukuri were in danger of being lost forever. So, Ex Gurkha Khukuri House was organized to preserve this ancient Nepalese tradition, and guarantee that the traditional, hereditary caste of smiths shall preserve this knowledge & skills while earning good income for their families. The Ex Gurkha Khukuri House is also a place to practice their craftsmanship and to teach & pass this ancient tradition to the next generation. Today, these Kaamis are able to continue their ancient traditional profession in the Ex Gurkha Khukuri House family.

Our Kaamis come from all over Nepal and proudly represent the various, distinctive styles and traditions of khukuri making from different places like Bhojpur, Salyan, Dhankuta, Chainpure, etc. They are the living repositories of the art and science behind crafting the Nepalese khukuri. Their extensive knowledge and experience allow them to produce any style or design of khukuri that you can imagine. If you desire a custom khukuri of any design, or an ornately engraved presentation model khukuri then rest assured, these dedicated craftsmen can make you anything you wish. Just head to the Custom Order in the Know More section at the top of the menu.

The Gurkha warriors, who use our khukuris in areas of conflict throughout the world, literally bet their lives on our blades, and we do not disappoint them even once. Our khukuris are genuine, authentic, strong, sharp, and graceful. They are hand-hammered straight out of red-hot highly graded 5160 carbon steel, then polished, sharpened, handled, and sheathed one-at-a-time, by the master craftsmen utilizing both ancient methods and a few modern tools.

About Owner:

From early childhood, our Managing Director, Mr. Himal Raj Giri has always been fascinated by the khukuri. He was literally born into this tradition in a Chhetri family which is the hereditary warrior caste of Nepal. He was told stories of the glory and adventure of the Gurkha soldiers by his Grandfather, who was himself was a Gurkha. Himal began training in martial arts at age of 10 and received his black belt in the Kyokushin Kai system of Japanese Karate, founded by the late master Masutatsu Oyama, a system famed throughout the world for the toughness of its training methods. Upon receiving his first dan black belt in his early 20s, he began teaching the younger students karate. He also resolved to combine the art of karate with the art of using traditional Nepalese khukuri.

egkh - Director Ex Gurkha Khukuri House

To further broaden his understanding of the khukuri he began working in a khukuri manufacturing house in Thamel, and served as a manager there for five years, learning everything he could about its craftsmanship, history, traditions as well as the history, beliefs, customs, and traditions of Nepal’s Gurkha warriors. The knowledge and respect for those traditions he gained in these years as well as his ongoing fascination with the khukuri inspired him to start the Ex Gurkha Khukuri House, with the idea of promoting khukuris and other products of Nepalese craftsmanship and giving human dignity, a better life, and a better income to the caste of hereditary metalsmiths and other workers who preserved the tradition of crafting the Nepalese khukuri as it should be.

Today, Himal Raj Giri remains dedicated to providing his customers with the best service possible, and the best possible value for their money. As awareness of the quality and tradition of genuine Gurkha khukuris continues to spread throughout the world, he continues to be devoted to the task of meeting the increasing demands for the blades, while preserving the quality of these fine handcrafted Nepalese knives. Under his guidance, Ex Gurkha Khukuri House continues its commitment in manufacturing & delivering the best traditional khukuris throughout the world.
